Organic fertilizer out of waste water

The demand for fertilizers based on phosphorus increases constantly in agriculture, while at the same time the sources are decreasing, having as result the exporting and the preparation of phosphorus to become more challenging and expensive. Moreover, Europe depends on imports of phosphorus from other countries, like Mexico and Morocco.

Researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB at Stuttgart, developed an equipment that regains phosphorus from waste waters without the use of chemicals and without affecting the environment. By installing a mechanical equipment, researchers can extract fertilizers from waste waters in a form that is ready to use.
